PREFACE:
The aim of secondary education is to make the
learners fit for entry into higher education by flourishing their latent
talents and prospects with a view to building the nation with the spirit of the
Language Movement and the Liberation War. To make the learners skilled and
competent citizens of the country based on the economic, social, cultural and
environmental settings is also an important issue of secondary education. The
textbooks of secondary level have been written and compiled according to the
revised curriculum 2012 in accordance with the aims and objectives of National
Education Policy-2010. Contents and presentations of the textbooks have been
selected according to the moral and humanistic values of Bengali tradition and
culture and the spirit of Liberation War 1971 ensuring equal dignity for all
irrespective of caste and creed of different religions and sex.
The present government is committed to ensure the
successful implementation of Vision 2021. Honorable Prime Minister, Government
of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina expressed her firm
determination to make the country free from illiteracy and instructed the
concerned authority to give free textbooks to every student of the country.
National Curriculum and Textbook Board started to distribute textbooks free of
cost since 2010 according to her instruction.
In the era of globalization, English is one of the
most powerful tools for pursuing higher studies, using technology, inter-
cultural and inter-personal communications, and job markets at home and abroad.
The curriculum makes it explicit that language learning will be graded and
contents will reflect real life situations as the ultimate purpose of language
learning is to communicate. The English for Today textbooks have been developed
to help students attain competency in all four language skills, i.e. listening,
speaking, reading and writing. The contents and illustrations of this textbook
have been developed in order to suit the learners' age and cognitive level.
The textbook has been revised and re-edited by a
prominent educationist to make it learner friendly in 2017. I thank sincerely
all for their intellectual labour who were involved in the process of revision,
writing, editing, art and design of the textbook.

মুখবন্ধঃ
মাধ্যমিক শিক্ষার লক্ষ্য হলো ভাষা আন্দোলন
ও মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনায় জাতি গঠনের লক্ষ্যে শিক্ষার্থীদের সুপ্ত প্রতিভা ও সম্ভাবনার
বিকাশ ঘটিয়ে উচ্চ শিক্ষায় প্রবেশের উপযোগী করে তোলা। দেশের অর্থনৈতিক, সামাজিক, সাংস্কৃতিক
ও পরিবেশগত পরিস্থিতির ভিত্তিতে শিক্ষার্থীদের দক্ষ ও যোগ্য নাগরিক হিসেবে গড়ে তোলাও
মাধ্যমিক শিক্ষার একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়। মাধ্যমিক স্তরের পাঠ্যপুস্তকগুলি জাতীয়
শিক্ষানীতি-২০১০ এর লক্ষ্য ও উদ্দেশ্য অনুসারে, সংশোধিত ২০১২ সালের পাঠ্যক্রম অনুসারে
লেখা ও সংকলন করা হয়েছে। পাঠ্যপুস্তকের বিষয়বস্তু ও উপস্থাপনা বাঙালির ঐতিহ্য ও সংস্কৃতির
নৈতিক ও মানবিক মূল্যবোধ এবং জাতি-ধর্ম-বর্ণ নির্বিশেষে সকলের সমান মর্যাদা নিশ্চিত
করে ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা অনুযায়ী নির্বাচন করা হয়েছে।
বর্তমান সরকার রূপকল্প ২০২১ এর সফল বাস্তবায়ন
নিশ্চিত করতে প্রতিশ্রুতিবদ্ধ। মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী, গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকার,
শেখ হাসিনা দেশকে নিরক্ষরতামুক্ত করার দৃঢ় প্রত্যয় ব্যক্ত করেন এবং দেশের প্রতিটি
শিক্ষার্থীকে বিনামূল্যে পাঠ্যপুস্তক দেওয়ার জন্য সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষকে নির্দেশ দেন।
তাঁর নির্দেশনা অনুযায়ী জাতীয় শিক্ষাক্রম ও পাঠ্যপুস্তক বোর্ড ২০১০ সাল থেকে বিনামূল্যে
পাঠ্যপুস্তক বিতরণ শুরু করে।
বিশ্বায়নের যুগে উচ্চশিক্ষা, প্রযুক্তি
ব্যবহার, আন্তঃসাংস্কৃতিক ও আন্তঃব্যক্তিগত যোগাযোগ এবং দেশে ও বিদেশে চাকরির বাজারের
জন্য ইংরেজি হল অন্যতম শক্তিশালী হাতিয়ার। পাঠ্যক্রমটি স্পষ্ট করে যে, ভাষা শিক্ষাকে
গ্রেড করা হবে এবং বিষয়বস্তু বাস্তব জীবনের পরিস্থিতি প্রতিফলিত করবে কারণ ভাষা শিক্ষার
চূড়ান্ত উদ্দেশ্য হল যোগাযোগ করা। ইংলিশ ফর টুডে পাঠ্যপুস্তকগুলি শিক্ষার্থীদের চারটি
ভাষায় দক্ষতা অর্জনে সহায়তা করার জন্য তৈরি করা হয়েছে, যেমন- শোনা, কথা বলা, পড়া
এবং লেখা। এই পাঠ্যপুস্তকের বিষয়বস্তু এবং চিত্রগুলি শিক্ষার্থীদের বয়স এবং জ্ঞানীয়
স্তর অনুসারে তৈরি করা হয়েছে।
পাঠ্যপুস্তকটি ২০১৭ সালে একজন বিশিষ্ট
শিক্ষাবিদ দ্বারা সংশোধিত ও পুনঃসম্পাদনা করা হয়েছে যাতে এটিকে শিক্ষার্থীবান্ধব করে
তোলা যায়। পাঠ্যপুস্তকের সংশোধন, লেখা, সম্পাদনা, শিল্প ও নকশা প্রক্রিয়ার সাথে যাঁরা
জড়িত, তাদের বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক শ্রমের জন্য আমি আন্তরিকভাবে ধন্যবাদ জানাই।
